Dr. Bbosa Calls for a Dedicated Ministry for Uganda’s Entertainment Sector

A Pioneer in the Arts Advocates for Structural Changes to Support the Creative Industry

Dr. Bbosa Bagenda, a prominent figure in Uganda’s entertainment scene and a founding member of the renowned drama group, the Ebonies, has urged the government to establish a fully-fledged ministry dedicated to the entertainment sector. His appeal comes after decades of fluctuating support for the arts in Uganda, highlighting the need for structured governance in the creative industry.

Reflecting on the past 40 years of President Museveni’s administration, Dr. Bagenda noted that the first two decades were marked by significant challenges for artists and creatives. Access to essential resources and opportunities in the arts field was severely limited. However, he expressed optimism about the progress made in the last 20 years, which he attributes to various improvements in the sector.

Dr. Bagenda argues that the entertainment sector has matured enough to warrant its own ministry. He believes that establishing a dedicated ministry would provide a platform for better resource allocation, policy formulation, and support for artists. “What we need now is a fully-fledged ministry to oversee the entertainment sector,” he stated.

One of the key points raised by Dr. Bagenda is the importance of having the new ministry led by technocrats rather than artists. He expressed concerns about the current leadership within the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), which is led by artist Eddy Kenzo. Dr. Bagenda believes that professionals with expertise in management and governance should lead the ministry to ensure it meets its objectives effectively.

As the Ugandan entertainment sector continues to grow and evolve, Dr. Bbosa Bagenda’s call for a dedicated ministry reflects a broader need for structured support in the creative industry. By prioritizing technocratic leadership, Uganda can enhance its arts sector and provide artists with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
