Six Die in Rukungiri-Bound Bus Accident: Tragic Collision

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of six people, including a police officer, when a Rukungiri-bound bus collided with a stationary taxi in Kakiika Trading Center. The collision has raised concerns over road safety and prompted an investigation by authorities.

The Accident Details

The fatal accident occurred early in the morning along the Ntungamo-Rukungiri highway. A Rukungiri-bound bus from Kampala veered off the road and crashed into a stationary Toyota Hiace taxi. The taxi had stopped due to a tyre puncture and was partially on the tarmac, with full lights on.

Victims Identified

Among the deceased were Police Constable Brian Agereza, bus driver Robert Arinaitwe, and Urban Kakye, the owner of the Toyota Hiace taxi. Other victims included John Baptist Banturaki, Herbert Kwikiriza, and an unidentified man. The injured were taken to nearby medical centers for treatment.

Police Statement

Traffic police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura explained that the taxi, coming from Rukungiri to Ntungamo, had parked due to a tyre puncture. The bus, unable to avoid the vehicle, crashed into it, resulting in the immediate deaths of six people.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation

Emergency services responded quickly, transporting the injured to Devine Health and Ntungamo Specialist Medical Centres. The deceased were taken to Rwashameire Health Centre IV for autopsies. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future incidents.
